In 2016, the Department of Health's National Nutrition Council (NNC) of the Philipines emphasized the need to develop a Childhood Care and Development Intervention Package (ECCD-IP) to support the first 1000 days of a child's development. As studies show, proper nutrition during this period, ranging from conception to two years of age, increases the likelihood that a child will reach their growth potential. Adversely, children affected by chronic malnutrition (stunting) during this critical period risk a hindered growth, affecting their motor and cognitive development which negatively impacts school performance and work productivity.
Nutriset developed and tested specific products for health programmes that aim at overcoming nutritional deficiencies and preventing malnutrition. This range of product is called Enov® and is now registered and available in the Philippines.
The Enov® product range came out of the International Lipid-Based Nutrient Supplements (iLiNS), a multi-year research consortium, acclaimed for its study results demonstrating that pregnant and lactating women, who receive a supplementation with lipid core small amount, are better able to give birth to children who do not develop signs of growth retardation and have a good engine development. Nutriset built on this scientific evidence to create innovative ready-to-use food products, categorized as Lipid-based Nutrient Supplement Small Quantity or LNS-SQ, and know as Enov’Nutributter® and Enov’MumTM.
Within a 1000 days programmatic approach, the NNC's Childhood Care and Development Intervention Package (ECCD-IP) is apprehended as a continuum of health care services, united by protocols and guidelines to achieve results at scale: reducing the number of low birthweight, increasing the prevalence of young children correctly provided with breastmilk and complementary food, promoting exclusive breastfeeding, etc. An overarching target of these multiple interventions is to reduce stunting among 0 to 59 months old children in the Philippines.
In the words of Ms. Maria-Bernardita T. Flores, Assistant Secretary of Health of the NNC : “In order to make a dent in our nutrition situation, we must continue to do things that work,” adding the need “to prioritize the first 1000 days of life as the window of opportunity to improve the nutrition of the next generation children.”* The "Conquer Malnutrition" programme launched in 2016, targetting primarily areas hit by either conflict or natural disasters, and the provision of National Dietary Guidelines, are instrumental to strengthen the effectiveness of the existing interventions to improve child health development and prevent stunting.
In this context and in support to the Childhood Care and Development Intervention Package, Nutriset makes Enov® available in the Philippines. One sachet of this ready-to-eat supplement contains the daily ratio of vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids. Much more than a healthy snack, Enov’MumTM is a nutritional support for pregnant and lactating women, and the baby they nurture during pregnancy and breastfeeding. From 6 to 24 months, Enov’Nutributter® helps infants get all the nutrients needed for their age motor and cognitive development.
