Nutriset is proud to announce its first shipment of Enov® products to the Department of Health (DoH) of the Philippines for interventions targeting the nutrient supplementation of pregnant and breastfeeding women, and young children up to 2 years old, within the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition 2017 – 2022 (PPAN).

Nutriset successfully responded to a Call for tenders (IB Bo. 2018-097 and IB Bo. 2018-098) to supply Lipid-based Nutrient Supplement Small Quantity (LNS-SQ), leading to the order of 210 metric tons of Enov'MumTM to care for 20,500 pregnant and breastfeeding women in need of nutrient supplements. This is completed by 322 metric tons of Enov'Nutributter® to reach, for a period of 6 months, about 85,185 children from 6 to 24 months old who needs nutritional support to prevent a stunted growth.

As studies show, children who are stunted before their first birthday are often delayed in schooling at age eight, and score lower on cognitive tests compared to those who were not stunted (Crookston, Schott, Cueto, Dearden, Engle, Georgiadis, et al., 2013). But the cost of stunting is high for a country. In its report "Cost of hunger in the Philippines", Action Against Hunger highlights that "productivity losses caused by childhood undernutrition amounting to PHP326.5 billion, or 2.83% of the Philippines’ GDP […] includes the annual reduction in potential income of 1.44% of the national GDP (PhP166.5 billion), and the annual loss in potential income due to premature child mortality of 1.39% of GDP (PhP160 billion)."

The DoH is leading the implementation of nutrition-sensitive programmes to trigger significant positive transformational changes in terms of education levels, access to work and overall development of the Philippines, by allowing better cared-for and better-fed individuals to fully take their place in society. Actions to ensure proper nutrition of pregnant and breastfeeding women, and infants up to 24 months, are essential for child development and well-being. They are key to prevent stunting.

Nutriset is honored to serve the needs of the people of the Philippines, through this new partnership with the DoH, and looks forward to nurturing relationships with all stakeholders involved in tackling malnutrition in the country. Our combined expertise will strengthen nutrition-sensitive interventions to ensure the healthy growth of children and contribute to nutritional autonomy for all in the Philippines.
