Plumpy'Doz™ corn formula is a ready-to-use nutrient supplement also defined as a Lipid-based Nutrient Supplement Medium Quantity (LNS-MQ)

✓ For children from 6 months old and older

Nutriset has developed the Plumpy'Doz™ corn formula in order to:

  • Enhance the acceptability of LNS-MQ and program for target populations in areas where maize is a staple food and part of a daily diet,
  • Increase the accessibility of LNS-MQ to allow for the extension of programs and increase the coverage of vulnerable populations,
  • Provide humanitarian organizations and programs with an alternative solution, adding a new reference to the Nutriset product range.

In the first years of life, children living in developing countries are most at risk of undernutrition. As this is an important period of growth and development, it is crucial to correct the nutritional status of these young groups as early as possible.

From the age of 6 months up, once the recommended period of exclusive breastfeeding is finished, the infant's needs for energy and nutrients begin to exceed what mother's milk can give.

A high quality supplementary food then becomes indispensible to compensate for this deficit.

It is during this important growth phase that children are most at risk of denutrition. In a large number of developing countries, supplementary food adapted to the specific nutritional needs of infants and young children (6 – 24 months) is often unavailable or inaccessible. This problem is particularly severe during at-risk periods such as the lean season (the months between the depletion of family food stocks and the next harvest) in agricultural areas.

✓ To treat Moderate Acute Malnutrition and for prevention

As they are unable to consume sufficiently rich and diversified food, a large number of children become malnourished, which can be either chronic malnutrition (micronutrient deficiencies leading to retarded growth) or acute malnutrition (characterized by weight deficiency).

To meet our objective of preventing malnutrition in countries where acute malnutrition is endemic, Plumpy’Doz™ corn formula was developed to compensate for the deficiencies of the traditional diet of infants and young children (6-36 months), and then adapted to the nutritional specifications for 6 months old children and older. By providing them, via a daily dose, with micronutrients, but also with high quality proteins and essential fatty acids, Plumpy’Doz™ corn formula can help to reduce the incidence of acute malnutrition in regions affected by serious food insecurity.

This product is particularly suited to humanitarian emergencies when a large number of young children are at risk of malnutrition. As it can be given without a medical prescription, Plumpy’Doz™ corn formula is particularly used in association with blanket feeding programmes targeting infants and young children, from 6 months old and older, who are not malnourished but who are at risk of malnutrition.

Plumpy’Doz™ corn formula is not substitute for a varied and nutritious diet and for breastfeeding.

Immediate breastfeeding after birth, exclusive during the first 6 months and recommended for at least 24 months.

Acceptability studies comparing Plumpy'Sup™ corn formula with Plumpy'Sup™ (standard formula)

Both studies show good acceptability at the same level for Plumpy'Sup™ corn formula and Plumpy'Sup™ (standard formula).

  • In Malawi, among 40 children aged 12 to 23 months with moderate acute malnutrition
  • In Kenya, rural areas of Kajiado District, among 153 children aged 12 to 24 months, and their mothers or caretakers, at high risk of food insecurity

NOTE: The formulas of Plumpy'Doz™ and Plumpy'Doz™ corn formula are respectively identical to Plumpy'Sup™ and Plumpy'Sup™ corn formula.
